Welcome to the Kuilsriver Doctors Health Blog
Welcome to the Kuilsriver Doctors health blog. We created this space because we believe patients who understand their health make better decisions — and because the questions our patients ask us every day deserve thorough, honest answers rather than a rushed explanation at the end of a consultation.
We are a general practice based in Kuils River, Cape Town, serving the communities of Kuilsriver, Brackenfell, Blue Downs, Eerste River, and the surrounding areas. The practice has been open since 2004 and is run by Dr Fernando Adams, who holds the MBChB degree from Stellenbosch University. His clinical interests span chronic disease management, travel medicine, occupational health, and paediatric care.
This blog is not a substitute for a consultation. If you are unwell or concerned about a symptom, please book an appointment or call the practice. What we publish here is general, evidence-based health information grounded in the South African context — because international health advice does not always map neatly onto the specific diseases, vaccines, medical aid rules, and environmental conditions that affect people living in the Western Cape.
What You Will Find Here
We cover the topics our patients ask about most, organised into the following areas:
Chronic disease management. Diabetes and high blood pressure are among the most common conditions we manage at the practice. Our post on diabetes care at your Kuilsriver GP explains how regular HbA1c monitoring, lifestyle changes, and medication reviews work together. If blood pressure is your concern, understanding and controlling high blood pressure in Kuilsriver walks through what the numbers mean and when to act.
Travel health. Many of our patients travel to neighbouring countries for holidays, work, or family visits. We cover the vaccinations and medications you need before you go. Travel vaccinations for Mozambique, Zanzibar, and East Africa is one of our most practical guides, and malaria prevention tablets for South African travellers covers the different prophylaxis options available and how to choose between them.
Paediatric and child health. We see children from birth for vaccinations and routine checks. Our post on the childhood vaccination schedule in South Africa maps out the EPI schedule and explains what each vaccine protects against and when it is due.
Mental health. GPs are often the first port of call for anxiety, depression, and burnout. We have written about mental health support from your Kuilsriver GP for patients who are not sure where to start or what a GP can do beyond a referral.
Occupational and workplace health. We are registered to perform pre-employment medicals, PrDP medicals, and fitness-to-work assessments. Occupational health services in Kuilsriver and Brackenfell explains what these assessments involve and who needs them.
Preventive care and screenings. Early detection matters. Our post on skin cancer screening in Kuilsriver covers who is at risk, what the warning signs are, and how a GP-led screening visit works.
We also cover vaccinations for adults, women’s health, medical certificates, and seasonal topics like the flu vaccine. The blog grows with each new post and is updated when guidelines change.
